Maersk container vessel rams into Chinese freighter, killing one crew member

 

According to Xinde Maritime News quoted by Next Shipping, a container vessel chartered and operated by Maersk, named BF TIGER, collided in the waters off Zhejiang, China. The accident caused the sinking of a Chinese freighter, killing one of its crew members.

 

 

 

The accident occurred in the early morning of Sunday (August 7), Beijing time. The Chinese cargo ship that was hit and sunk was named XINGHANG 48 (XH489 for short), and there were 4 people on board, one of whom was killed.

 

According to the information from Shipxun.com, before the incident, the container ship BF Tiger had docked at the three major ports of Dalian, Tianjin and Qingdao in China. On the way to Hong Kong, Shenzhen Yantian and Guangzhou Nansha port, when sailing through the sea area as shown in the figure, it met with the ship. The XH489 wheel had a collision accident.

 

The latest AIS location information of XH489 is not available on the Ship News Online. The last AIS issue of this ship was displayed at around 1420 on July 25, when the ship was still in the Yangtze River. The ship is 118 meters long and 19 meters wide. It is reported that after the collision, the BF Tiger involved has returned to the south anchorage of Xiashimen, Zhoushan, Ningbo, where it will undergo further inspection/investigation.

 

According to data on Maersk's official website, the BF Tiger was built in 2006 with a capacity of 2,824TEU and a length of 222 meters. The ship owner is FOROOHARI SCHIFFAHRTS, Germany, and the ship management company is BF SHIPMANAGEMENT. The vessel is currently being leased to Maersk for operation. It was originally planned to call at Hong Kong, Shenzhen Yantian, Guangzhou Nansha and other ports before heading to Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam and Laem Chabang in Thailand.
