Truck tonnage saw a decrease in March, according to data issued this week by the American Trucking Associations (ATA).

The ATA’s advanced Seasonally Adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index fell 1.2%, to 111.7 (2015=100), following a 2.2% March decline. On an annual basis, the April SA was off 1.5%, marking the 14th consecutive annual decline, following March’s 1.3% annual decrease.  

The ATA’s not seasonally-adjusted (NSA) index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by fleets before any seasonal adjustment and the metric ATA says fleets should benchmark their levels with, came in at 112.2, down 1.7% from March. ATA said that this index is dominated by contract freight rather than spot market freight.

“The truck freight market remained soft in April as seasonally adjusted volumes fell for the second straight month,” said American Trucking Associations Chief Economist Bob Costello in a statement. “With a rebound in freight remaining elusive, it is likely that additional capacity will leave the industry in the face of continued softness in the market.”
