On March 5, an MSC Mediterranean ship ran aground in the Suez Canal, causing some ships to be diverted. MSC Istanbul, a 16,000-teu super-large container ship flagged by Liberia, ran aground while passing through the Suez Canal on its way from Malaysia to Portugal, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) said. The incident caused some container ships to shift from the western channel to the eastern channel, and then all ships from the north and south passed through normally.

The accident happened at about 1600 GMT when the ship ran aground 78 kilometers north after entering the canal, according to ship data. The Suez Canal Authority used four tugboats, Port Said, Mosaed I, Mosaed 2 and Mosaed 5, to free the stranded ship, which eventually succeeded in getting it off the shallow surface. The grounding has not affected traffic through the Suez Canal and all southbound ships are operating normally, but northbound ships need to be diverted from the west channel to the east, the SCA said.

MSC ISTANBUL, which was built in 2015, has a capacity of 16,652TEu and flies the flag of Liberia. It is currently deployed by MSC on LION SERVICE routes and is connected to Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen and other China’s ports.
